Visual Performance of Pigeons

چکیده

Even superficial observation of birds in their natural environment suggests that the performance of their visual system is at least on a par with ours. Many detailed field studies amply confirm this inference. During a 3-year study of free-ranging skylarks (Alauda arvensis), circumstantial evidence indicated that their vision was superior to that of the observer in a variety of situations (Delius, 1963). The skylarks could clearly recognize each other individually at a range of 30 m or more purely by visual cues, while the observer could only do so unreliably when aided by a 30x telescope . Skylarks spotted merlins or pigeon hawks (Falea ealumbarius) flying overhead at heights where the observer positively could not resolve them without the aid of 8 X binoculars. Perhaps these songbirds' most remarkable performance was the detection of minute, usually camouflaged insect prey in dune sand and vegetation. As hard as the observer tried, helped by a 5 X magnifying lens, his hunting success rate was at best only a tenth that of skylarks. Casual observations of free-ranging domestic pigeons (Calumba livia) indicate that their vision is, if anything, better than that of skylarks. We are thus inclined to believe that the measures of visual capabilities that we obtain in the laboratory are still only a pale reflection of the real performance of the pigeon's visual system.

Rapid Visual Processing of Picture Stimuli by Pigeons in an RSVP Task

Three experiments that were carried out in series with 5 pigeons used novel training methods to investigate the rapid visual processing of picture stimuli by pigeons. On each trial, a sequence containing 1 of 2 bird pictures (the target) and nontarget bird pictures (the distractors) was presented. After the termination of the last item in the sequence, the pigeons were required to choose 1 of 2...

Pigeons are known to be able to categorize a wide variety of visual stimulus classes. However, it remains unclear which are the characteristics of the perceptually relevant features employed to reach such good performance. Here, we investigate the relative contributions of texture and shape information to categorization decisions about complex natural classes. We trained three groups of pigeons...

Long-term Retention of Many Visual Patterns by Pigeon~

Using a simultaneaus discrimination procedure it was shown that pigeons were capable of learning to discriminate 100 different black and white visual patterns from a further 625 similar stimuli, where responses to the former were rewarded and responses to the latter were not rewarded. Tests in which novel stimuli replaced either the rewarded or nonrewarded stimuli showed that the pigeons had no...

Categorization of multidimensional stimuli by pigeons.

Six pigeons responded in a visual category learning task in which the stimuli were dimensionally separable Gabor patches that varied in frequency and orientation. We compared performance in two conditions which varied in terms of whether accurate performance required that responding be controlled jointly by frequency and orientation, or selectively by frequency. Results showed that pigeons lear...

A dissociation of motion and spatial-pattern vision in the avian telencephalon: implications for the evolution of "visual streams".

The ectostriatum is a large visual structure in the avian telencephalon. Part of the tectofugal pathway, the ectostriatum receives a large ascending thalamic input from the nucleus rotundus, the homolog of the mammalian pulvinar complex. We investigated the effects of bilateral lesions of the ectostriatum in pigeons on visual motion and spatial-pattern perception tasks. To test motion perceptio...

Oddity of visual patterns conceptualized by pigeons

Pigeons were trained to learn an instrumental oddity-from-sample discrimination involving visual forms. One group, the "few examples" group, dealt with 5 patterns in 40 different combinations. Another group, the "many examples" group, dealt with 20 patterns in 160 different combinations. After both groups had reached asymptotic performance and had learned to operate under partial reinforcement ...
